\nis seventy-five years old,

\nThe neighboring
\ngrandfather\u2019s beard caves
\nare what the
\nKashmiri boy likes to float in.
\nBetween the wrinkles of his face,
\nwhich hold compressed sorrows,
\nhangs a waterfall-like beard.<\/p>\n

When Grandpa plays with
\nhis grandson Amir,
\nhe laughs.
\nThe Kashmiri boy, however,
\nin Parama Pada (Indian Snakes and Ladders)
\nalways rolls among the
\nsnakes.
\n\u201cWill a beard grow on me too one day?\u201d
\n\u201cIn Parama Pada, whether pieces survive
\ndepends on how many snakes bite them.\u201d
\nTwo days ago,
\nthe Kashmiri boy went to bring his friend Amir,
\nbut brought only his hand.
\nThat day exploded for the grandfather.<\/p>\n

In the dice rolled and scattered,
\nwere the yellowed teeth of two men with guns.
\nThe snakes on the Parama Pada board rose up
\nand coiled around the Kashmiri boy\u2019s neck,
\nall the ropes becoming
\nthe grandfather’s beard, twisting and turning.
\nIn the skulls of the villains rolling dice,
\na pendulum swing of sacrificed lives.<\/p>\n

A lifetime spent
\npaying taxes to age,
\na tax paid to live in a
\nslave nation.
\nThe murder of thinking is
\nthe tax paid to stay alive.
\nBetween the white beard\u2019s hairs,
\nshadows hidden away are
\nthe taxes paid by Grandpa so far
\nto keep living.
\nAs he draws cigarette smoke,
\na glimmer jumps from his eyes
\nand shines \u2013 still remaining
\nlife’s right.<\/p>\n

Expanding sorrow,
\nsubmerged in it,
\nnear the tree\u2019s shade,
\nstill loves the beard
\ntwo small eyes.
\nThe grandfather, a risen tree,
\nin his eyes swells tears,
\na white sap on his face,
\ndances with an ant
\nthe Kashmiri boy.<\/p>\n

Frozen like an unmoving glacier,
\ntime and
\ntearful floods
\nerode and vanish
