Thinking and survival

Don’t believe me

Sir, do you have a pen?

An ambulance arrived with a red siren blaring at the gate of the hospital that had grown into a skyscraper in the center of the city. The white uniformed staff who were waiting . They transferred the woman in the vehicle to a stretcher and quickly took her to the emergency department. The doctor there ran over and saw that the woman’s daughter and son-in-law were standing there with worried faces. The doctor ,

‘Tell me what’s wrong’

‘Doctor, my mother has had a headache and a stuffy nose for a week.’

‘What did you do about it?’

‘Did we buy the medicine from the doctor we see regularly?’

‘Where?’

‘Sir, this guy’s son has gone to Coimbatore’

‘Mom just got here yesterday’

‘It’s okay, I was just tired’

‘What did you eat last night?’

‘Italian, coconut chutney’

‘They were asleep, and suddenly they felt a pounding pain in their chest and fell down’

Said daughter Veda.

‘You called at the right time, we’ll see’

“Nurse, make them sit in the lobby.”

“Sir, please, Madam, please

She said that and took him outside.

‘Madam, sit here,’

“Nalina, give them some water to drink,” she said to another nurse.

The veranda and the rooms were filled with excitement as if a wartime cloud had descended. A cardiologist was urgently called in. The operation theater was prepared. Oxygen was applied and Gothai was taken back to the second floor on a stretcher by the staff.

Arun held Veda’s hand,

‘Nothing will happen to Aunty, be brave’

‘Tell your brother’

Veda wiped her eyes and leaned on her husband’s shoulder.

Just then, the doctor came out of the room.

They both got up and went to him.

‘Arun, this is the first attack’

Now they have woken up.

‘There’s nothing to worry about now, but I need to take some tests’

‘Okay, sir’

“We’ll admit you,” the cardiologist said.

Gothai was transferred to the emergency room. They went inside and saw that she was on oxygen.

When Gothai saw Veda,

‘I have nothing, don’t cry’

Tears streamed down Veda’s cheeks as she held her mother’s hands.

‘That’s nothing, you’re weak, we’ll admit you’

Arun said. She smiled faintly at her nephew.

The nurse who came in said, “Let them rest, you go.”

After telling Gothai, they both came out.

‘What, I’m here, you go home’

‘No, if you want to buy something, call me, I’ll be there’

‘You go, you’ll be alone, come back in the morning’

Saying that, Arun called the driver.

Veda arrived home in twenty minutes, her son and daughter ran over, hugging and cheering,

‘What’s wrong with Aachi, Ma?’

She said, “I have a mild chest pain, but I’m feeling better now. I’ll go and see you tomorrow,” and put me to bed. She wasn’t the only one who couldn’t sleep.

My mother was not feeling well when she came from the village, her eyes were swollen and red. She said that the headache and stuffy nose were fine now. She looked like she had lost something. My brother is a mathematics professor in a government college. My sister-in-law works in a national bank. She is the only girl and is studying in her third year of engineering.

The father made them both study in a government school. Chandran (Veda’s brother), who had won a gold medal in college, got a job in a government college. He liked Kala, who had studied with him in college, and the father fulfilled his son’s wish.

Veda stopped with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, has no interest in achieving anything great, and has been married to her nephew Arun for fifteen years.

It has been seven years since my father, who was a postmaster, retired. It has been four years since my mother, who was a primary school teacher, retired. Both of them. Despite my brother’s insistence, they were alone in the village, occasionally visiting their son and daughter’s homes. Since my father was a farming family, he had a coconut grove, twenty-five acres of sorghum land, and a mango grove, and he had leased everything out.

He has bought houses with good facilities for Veda and Chandran. They do whatever they want for their grandchildren from time to time. They do not complain about anything.

My father had no illness before the coronavirus, but after it came and went, his asthma became permanent. He used to go to the hospital from time to time. This is what took his life. It’s been six months since my father died.

Mother has no illness, she is very strong-willed, she has refused to come and stay with anyone, she is alone in the village. (Mother’s younger brother) Uncle often visits her. Why did she suddenly become like this? What happened? She thought and fell asleep out of boredom.

How does she know?

Two months before his death, Sadasivam consulted Gothai and wrote a formal will.

‘Why, what’s the hurry now?’

‘You can’t tell who will change how’

‘Our children are loved by the city’.

“You don’t know anything, never trust anyone.”

The moon saw this a month after his death. His face turned pale,

He had divided his existing assets equally between his son and daughter.

He had given his two sisters fifty thousand each out of the two hundred thousand in the bank and divided the rest equally between them.

He had written that his house should be divided equally between the two of them after his wife’s death. Chandran said that this was not right, he could give only two acres of land to his sister, and he did not have to give anything else. It was still smoking.

About ten days ago, he brought a broker to sell the house,

Gothai was shocked and said she couldn’t sell it.

I didn’t expect my son to change like this. Two days ago, Chandran called me.

“Mom, come as soon as the car arrives tomorrow morning,” he said. Gothai said she would explain to her son and come. The conversation began at ten that morning,

‘Mom, come home, stay with us’

‘That’s not possible, brother, your memory of your father is too close’

‘You’re old, you don’t understand’

‘Don’t be so affectionate towards me, your mother’

‘If you had affection for me, would you arrange things as I asked?’

‘I will not disobey my father’s words, brother’

“Okay, I’ll be away, I’ll stay home as long as you’re here.”

Write the rest to me, write the two acres to Veda.

‘What’s wrong with you? What’s wrong with you?’

‘I’m very clear, what do you need two pensions for? Give me one of them’

Unable to bear the thought of a pension,

“Oh my, this is my husband’s, it’s my right, I can’t give it to anyone else,” she said.

It’s two o’clock.

Chandran was speaking as if under a spell.

Gothai hadn’t eaten anything since morning, so she hurriedly picked up her handbag and came out.

“Emma, take the car, I want to go to Dindigul,” she said and got into the car. Veda was surprised to see her mother who arrived at four in the evening and got out. This is what happened.

Gothai was moved to a room the next day.

‘Have you told your brother?’

‘I told you, but I feel sad, don’t worry too much’

Gothai called Aruna,

‘Tell the lawyer and the moon to come tomorrow, please.’

‘Why is that, what’s going on, what are you going to do?’

‘You’re spoiling the mood, be quiet’

“First of all, may your health be good, aunty, may the moon take care of everything.”

‘Arun, will you make this arrangement tomorrow?’

“Don’t believe the doctors who tell your daughter, Amma, a thousand things,” she said.
